Obituary:
Cloyd “Doc” Brown, 91, of Evansville, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born May 15, 1918 in Cisne, IL. Doc served in the infantry in World War II. He was wounded and taken as a P.O.W. to Stalag II-A in New Brandenburg, Germany. When their camp was liberated by the Russians in 1945, Doc and a few buddies stole a horse and buggy and escaped their liberators across Germany into France where they rejoined their unit. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and many campaign medals. Doc was the consummate entrepreneur, owning or managing many restaurants and clubs all across the country, including the Kennel Club, Rolling Hills Country Club, the Lamplighter Inn, the Coral Room at the McCurdy Hotel and many barbeque restaurants. He also loved baseball, watching his beloved Cardinals was the highlight of his days. Doc will be greatly missed by his family. Surviving Doc are his wife of 59 years, Violet “Sue” Brown; children, Ken (Peggy) Lewis, of Sneads, FL, Terry (Lynne) Lewis of Evansville, Lana (Larry) Bloom of Mt. Juliet, TN and Roger (Rae Ann) Brown of LaPorte, IN. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren, one brother, Gene (Billie) Brown of Springfield, IL and one nephew. Doc was preceded in death by a son, Gary Lewis, a grandson and a great grandson. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Monday, November 16, 2009 at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, Sr. Jenny Miller officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where the Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until service time on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children’s Foundation, 30 S.
