Obituary:
Wilma M. (Elpers) Gumbel, 77, of rural Evansville, passed away at her home, Thursday, November 12, 2009. Wilma was a homemaker and helped on the family farm. She was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church and the Riverbend Ladies Auxiliary. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Wilma loved to play cards, dance and enjoyed being around people. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Joseph Gumbel in September 2003; a daughter, Linda Gumbel, her parents, Marie (Halbig) and Aloysius Elpers and two sisters, Jeannette Hall and Jeanne Elpers. Wilma is survived by three daughters, Debra Ann Lemp, Cheryl Ethridge and her husband, Greg, Marlene Ross and her husband Jeff, along with one son, Gary Gumbel and his wife, Darlene, all of St. Philip, IN; three sisters, Imogene Baehl of Evansville, Eileen Wassmer and Sharon Wassmer, both of Poseyville; two brothers, Harry Elpers of Evansville and Kenny Elpers of Ft. Branch. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Joe Ethridge, Jeremy Lemp, and Kelsey and Jacob Ross; four great grandchildren, Kyra Ann Ethridge, Dillan Ethridge, Konnor Ethridge and Briley Austin and her friend and companion, Kenny. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M. Monday, November 16 at St. Philip Catholic Church, Rev. Tom Kessler officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service at 5:00 P.M. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 A.M. until service time on Monday at the church. The family requests memorial contributions are made to the American Cancer Society.
