Obituary:
Cornelia Baumgart, 94, passed away on January 20, 2010, at the Heritage Center in Evansville. An active member of Sacred Heart parish for many years, Cornelia was a member of the first graduating class at Sacred Heart Elementary School. She and fellow classmate, Sylvester Baumgart, now deceased, would later marry. Cornelia was an athlete at heart. In her youth, she played basketball at Memorial High School and in an industrial league while working at Fendrich Cigar Company. Baseball was also an interest, and her position at centerfield in the summers earned her an offer to play in the Women’s Baseball League. Her mother, however, had other ideas, and she declined always to wonder, “What if…” In later years, she could be found watching sports on TV and rooting for her favorite team – Notre Dame. Besides Fendrich Cigar Company, Cornelia also worked at Helen’s Restaurant on St. Joseph’s Avenue for fourteen years, eventually being allowed to make Helen’s own signature recipe for cream pies. Family and friends have always been close to Cornelia’s heart. An outspoken, honest and strongly determined individual, her caring spirit, loyal nature, and undying devotion, especially for her beloved husband, left an indelible mark on those touched by her. Cornelia is survived by her son Stephen Baumgart of Reston, Virginia, daughter Mary Kay and son-in-law Robert Sayle of Hillsborough, California; four grandchildren, Michael Baumgart, Maggie Mumma, Paige Bellenbaum, and Robert (Tre) Sayle; three great grandchildren, Alex Mumma and Max and Ella Bellenbaum; brothers Paul and Dan Bitz; and devoted nephew William Fligeltaub, as well as other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 A.M. Monday at Pierre Funeral Home continuing at 11:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rev. Kenneth Herr officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 5:00 P.M. Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W.
