Audrey M. Grimes, age 85, of Evansville, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Deaconess Hospital.
Mrs. Grimes was born and raised in Nottingham, England. Audrey was proud to serve in the British Army during WWII, where she met her future husband, Paul Grimes. In 1946 she married Paul and moved to the United States. After moving to the states, Audrey was a telephone operator and later worked at the downtown DeJongs Store. She was a volunteer with the Deaconess Hospital Auxiliary for over 30 years.
Surviving are her nephew, Roger (Vivien) Jackson; nieces, Vicki (Alan) Batley and Mandy Kenna, all of England. Also surviving are her very special friend, Betty Faver, Stephanie Jones, her “treasure” and her beloved cat, Tootsie. She will be dearly missed and those who knew her knew what a special person she was.
Audrey was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Grimes in 1974.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. Tom Kessler officiating. Burial will be held in Wallace Lutheran Cemetery in Wallace, IN.
Friends may visit from 11:00 A.M. until service time on Saturday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street.
Audrey requested no flowers be sent, instead memorial contributions may be made to PAAWS (an animal rescue group), P.O. Box 115, Newburgh, IN 47629 or the USI Foundation, Paul and Audrey Grimes Scholarship Fund for Science and Engineering Students, 8600 University Drive, Evansville, IN 47712.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hatler and his staff and the Deaconess Nuero ICU Nurses for their loving care for Audrey.
