Alice J. Garness

Alice J. Garness, 75, of Evansville, passed away on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at Deaconess Hospital Gateway Campus. Alice was born in Centralia, Illinois on July 26, 1948 to the late Eleanor (South) Holmes Carson and Norman Holmes. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Lippe United Church of Christ. Alice grew up in Southern Illinois and Southern Indiana and met her husband Dennis in 1968. They fell in love immediately and were married on November 30, 1968. Alice was happily married to Dennis for 54 years and they built a wonderful family together. They started their family shortly after they were married in 1968 and had all three of their children by 1973. Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She faithfully hauled her three kids to their baseball practices and dance lessons and attended her grandchildren’s activities. She supported Dennis in his career and took care of their family with love and devotion. She was a wonderful cook in all regards and specialized in baking and decorating Christmas cookies. She enjoyed her decades long, annual tradition of decorating Christmas cookies with her family. Her love for her family and friends was limitless. She will be greatly missed. Alice is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Donnie Herrmann and Jennifer and John Rotelli; by a son and his wife, Danny and Teresa Garness; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Les Murdach and by grandchildren, Avery Garness, Ellie (Alex) Wickham, Devan Garness, Kole Johnson, Adam Herrmann, Eric Herrmann, Cloe Jewell and Grace Johnson. In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Dennis Garness in 2022 and by a grandson, Andy Herrmann in 2022. Funeral services for Alice will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday, July 31, 2023 at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will take place in Zion Lippe United Church of Christ Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 PM until service time on Monday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street.
