Arthur Austin Werner

Arthur Austin Werner, 86, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at the Linda E. White Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family. Art was born on December 7, 1937, in Evansville to the late Arthur Valerian and Mildred Louise (Schaad) Werner. The oldest of fifteen children, Art was remembered as the Shepherd to his younger siblings (the sheep). He graduated as Valedictorian from Mater Dei High School in 1955 and was a veteran of the United States Army. He worked in computer systems and accounting with several area businesses. In semi-retirement he worked as a courier for German American Bank. Art was an exceptional man—a gentleman by any measure. He remained humble throughout his life and was a generous servant, volunteering his time with his St. Agnes/Westside Catholic family and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Along with his beloved wife, Mary Jo, he was inducted into the Simon Brute Society for his service. He loved history, airplanes, and, above all, taking care of his family and friends. He showed his love through his generosity, and he loved treating anyone and everyone to a good meal. Though we will miss Artie deeply, we find comfort that he has been reunited with the love of his life, his dearest Mary. Together, they left a legacy that embodies the Fruits of the Spirit. We know, also, that while we may grieve, Dad would want us to “Keep ‘em flyin’.” Surviving Art are seven children, Amy (Mark) Happe; Jason (Angie) Werner; Laura (Brian) Martin; Ben Werner; Matthew (Lori) Werner; Noah (Amy) Werner and Abby (Zach) Zumbuhl; eight grandchildren, Max, Jack and Anneliese Happe; Luke Werner; Miles and Millie Martin; Gavin Werner and Layla Zumbuhl; sisters, Mary (Bill) Conaster and Susan (Mark) Best and brothers, Jim Werner, Vince (Judy) Werner, Michael Werner, David (Christine) Werner, Terry (Lea) Werner, Dan (Cindy) Werner, Chris (Sharon) Werner, Mark (Debbie) Werner, Tim Werner, Joseph Werner and Leonard Werner. In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Mary Jo (Weaver) Werner in 2021; by a brother, Larry Werner and by two sisters-in-law, Carolyn and Terri Werner. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 15, 2024, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Rev. Christopher Droste officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 5:00 PM on Sunday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service held at 2:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 AM until service time on Monday at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1600 Glendale Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, 767 E.
