Betty J Becker

Betty Jane (Johnstone) Becker, 97, of Evansville died at her home Wednesday, May 2. Betty grew up on the West Side and attended St. Boniface Grade School. She graduated from Memorial High School in 1933. She was married to Henry W. Becker for 50 years until his death in 1994. Betty attended Sacred Heart and St. Boniface Catholic Churches. Until she became ill, she was a regular attendant of the breakfast club at McDonald’s on St. Joe Avenue. She also belonged to a clabber card club that met at Hadi Shrine. Betty was an avid reader; she attended discussion groups at Red Bank and Oaklyn Libraries. For many years Betty and Henry acted in or helped with almost every play given by the Catholic Theatre Guild. Betty also enjoyed camping, weaving, quilting, biking, and birdwatching. Friends always described her as cheerful, energetic, positive, encouraging, and entertaining. She is survived by daughters Sr. Jane Becker, OSB, of Ferdinand, IN, Sara (David) Hayden of Evansville, Mary Jude (Wayne) Gerteisen of Evansville, Susan Becker (Bill Klemens) of San Francisco, CA, and son Christopher (Diana) Becker of Panama City, FL, grandchildren Rachel Bendat, Gregory Hayden, Nathaniel (Kasey) Hayden, Adam (Larita) Hayden, Daniel (Cindy) Sullivan, Zachary Becker, Alex Becker, Emily (Jeff) Werner, Melissa (Andy) Bean, Lee Becker, and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her parents Clara (Lohoff) and Edward H. “Turk” Johnstone, sister Mary Devine Adler, and brother Edward Johnstone. Funeral services for Betty will begin at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at Pierre Funeral Home, continuing at 10:00 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rev. David Nunning officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where a memorial service will be conducted by the church at 6:00 P.M. The family would like to thank Visiting Nurse Plus Hospice for all their caring help and support. Contributions may be made to Sisters of St. Benedict, Ferdinand, IN or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
