Donald Eugene Leathers

Donald Eugene Leathers, age 72, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2011 at his home in Evansville. Mr. Leathers had been diagnosed with throat cancer over 21 years ago and underwent a larengectomy on July 24, 1990. He was again diagnosed with cancer in 2009 Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city and had been employed as an electrician at Whirlpool and Alcoa where he retired from in June 2002. After his retirement from Alcoa, Don built a workshop at his home, where he built radio controlled airplanes. He led a very active and athletic life both as a young man and adult. He enjoyed swimming, diving, basketball and softball. Don loved racing and had driven cars in drag races. The last car he raced was a 1968 Chevy Camaro at Chandler. He also loved rebuilding cars and was in love with his 1965 Corvette. Mr. Leathers had served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. Surviving Don are his wife of 27 years, Sharon Crabtree Hilborn Leathers; his sister, Diana Leathers of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, Kristina (Matt) Roettger of Winslow and Tammy (Jeff) Nix of Boonville; six sons, Sam Leathers of Fargo, ND, Scott Leathers of Evansville, Gary Leathers of Melbourne, FL, Kyle (Anna Maria) Leathers of Bay City, MI, Rik Hilborn of Evansville and Robert Hilborn of Elberfeld, IN. Also surviving are grandchildren, Crystal (Johnny) Jones, Tai Leathers, Sam Leathers, Breah Marie Flores Willey, Lyric Eugene Leathers, Olivia and Rachel Roettger, Nathan Nix, Danielle (Chuck) Williams, Cody Nix, Kanna, Antill and Ramie Loyd and Adrian and Courtney Hilborn and great grandchildren, Jada and Isaiah Jones, Dosia Torres, Kaela Nix, Becca, Jordan, Jeffrey, Jalynn and Chase Williams. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Pierre Funeral Home, Sr. Jenny Miller officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street.
