Eloise A. Akin

Eloise Anna Helfrich Akin, daughter of George and Rosa Helfrich was raised in St Wendel IN. She had integrity, kindness, and a very strong work ethic that prevailed until her last days of her life. She was an excellent homemaker and provided delicious meals to her family and friends always providing Hoosier hospitality to those sitting at her table. She and her late husband, Newland grew fruits and vegetables in their garden to can and preserve these delicious foods before it was a new age hobby for the next generation. Eloise loved to play Clabber. In her 30's she and Edna Fehrenbacher were partners in the Evansville Clabber league and won first place during a yearly tournament. She continued her love of Clabber and sought by more than one of her nephews to be a Clabber Partner when a new game was forming all throughout her life. Her other hobbies were also lifelong passions: IU Basketball and the St. Louis Cardinals were favorite teams where she had gotten to know the players and their abilities by watching the games and reading about them in the Evansville Courier & Press Sports Section of the daily newspaper. She would talk about them as if she knew them first hand. She was the ultimate fan never missing a televised game. During her early working years she was an inspector at Servel for different components of refrigerator units until the War efforts when she worked as an Inspector during WWII inspecting the rivets for the Aircraft that was built in the Evansville area. Later, she worked at Shanes Manufacturing as an Inspector and later at Mead Johnson contracted by Manpower. Deceased husband, Newland D Akin Jr, sister, Marcella Helfrich Montgomery, brothers, Wilfred, Alvin, George Helfrich and son-in-law, Sam Wolf. Survived by son, James Akin, Connersville, IN, former daughter-in-law, Lee Ann Erbes Akin, Richmond, IN, daughter, Linda Akin Wolf, Maui, HI, grandchildren, William Akin, Indianapolis, Mallory Akin Riggi and husband Danilo, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Scott Wolf and wife Molly Wolf, Catawba, NC, and Matthew Wolf and partner, Nicholas Naber, Chicago IL. Sister, Jeanette Goedde, several godchildren and very special nieces and nephews. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00A.M. Saturday, November 11, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 9:30 A.M. until service time Saturday at St. Boniface Catholic Church.
