Esther C. Niemeier

Esther C. (Behme) Niemeier, 93, of Evansville, passed away Monday, August 6, 2018 at the Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center. Esther was born November 25, 1924 in Evansville to the late John and Irene (Niehaus) Behme. She graduated from Memorial High School in 1942; after graduation Esther and her sister, Eileen lived and worked in Los Angeles and then to New York for almost another year. They left New York to come home and take care of their brother Jack after their father died. Back in Evansville, Esther worked as a secretary for the United States Navy in the Evansville Shipyards during World War II, where she christened an LST. She also worked for International Steel, George S. Olive and retired from the Daughters of Charity. Esther had a wonderful sense of humor, loved her family and enjoyed reading and traveling with her husband Harold. Esther was an active longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County and the St. Ann’s Altar Society. Surviving Esther are her husband of 71 years, Harold Niemeier; six sons, Steve (Stephanie) Niemeier, Stanley (Tracy) Niemeier and Dennis (Diane) Niemeier, all of Evansville, Curtis (Dana) Niemeier of Melbourne Beach, FL and Roger Niemeier and Richard Niemeier, both of Evansville; grandchildren, Kyle Niemeier, Andrew Niemeier, Kevin Niemeier, Kristi Schaefer, Megan Johnson, Will Niemeier, Sam Niemeier, Amy Niemeier, Fred Niemeier, Matt Fisher and Hannah Huddleston; 17 great grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Roberta Behme. In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Niemeier; by a son, James Niemeier in 2000; two sisters, Eileen Ruminer and Juanita Pieklik and by a brother, Jack Behme. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 9:30 AM on Friday, August 10, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County, Rev. Eugene Schroeder officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted by the church at 4:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:00 AM until service time on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Esther’s caregivers with Family First and the staff of Pine Haven Health and Rehabilitation for the compassionate care they gave to Esther.
