Gerald Glenn Shane

Gerald Glenn “Jerry” Shane, 83, of Evansville, was granted eternal peace in the early morning of May 24, 2026. He was a beloved and cherished husband, father, Papaw, brother, and friend. He will be deeply missed and always remembered. Gerald was born the oldest child to the late Glenn and Betty (Rheinlander) Shane on February 15, 1943 in Evansville. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by siblings, Diane Willis, Sally Jane Shane, and Michael Shane. Jerry served his country in Vietnam as an Army Ranger and later in the Army National Guard. During his service, Jerry received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with V (valor) device. When he returned to civilian life, he worked as a postman for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. Jerry enjoyed fishing, making luers, and spending time outdoors. However, his greatest love and enjoyment came from spending time with his wife of almost 58 years, Rita (Mathis) Shane, their five children and spouses, nineteen grandchildren, and his canine companion, Buddy. He loved the time that he spent with his family at holidays and their frequent visits. Surviving Gerald are his wife, Rita; children, Glenn (Michelle) Shane, Bridget (James) Pfaffmann, Kyle (Stephanie) Shane, Rebekah (Adam) Nisley, and Victoria (Bryan) Ruder; grandchildren, Ashlynn Shane, Abigayle Shane, Catherine Shane, Glenn Shane, Drew Pfaffmann, Dylan Pfaffmann, Dawson Rose Pfaffmann, Delilah Pfaffmann, Kayla Shane, Isaiah Nisley, Eliana Nisley, Aleilah Nisley, Thomas Nisley, Silas Nisley, Marie Nisley, Lionel Ruder, Astoria Ruder, Odella Ruder, and Rosalina Ruder; his dog Buddy; as well as numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Jerry was very devoted to his family and spent years remodeling their home and making furniture for it. He made it a welcoming, comfortable place where all of his family felt at home. Prior to his passing, Jerry was able to express how much he adored his wife and the life that they created together. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Rev. Lowell Will officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 AM until service time on Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 418 N. Wabash Ave, Evansville, IN 47712.
