James "Jim" Newman

James G. “Jim” Newman passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 9, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 9, 1941 in Beech Creek, KY and was a graduate of Hughes Kirk High School. He retired from Cummings Cumberland in 2003. Jim lived his life as an example of his dedication and devotion to his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was an avid fan of the exceptional talents of his grandchildren and the University of Kentucky basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Bertha Newman and his brother, Steven Newman. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife of 48 years, Vicki; his daughter, Lisa (Duwayne) Schmitt; son, Michael (Stephanie) Newman, both of Evansville; grandchildren, Lindsay and Kyndel Dollison, Bryan and Kayli Newman and Taylor and Austin Schmitt. Also surviving are two brothers, Ray (Barbara) Newman of Blairsville and Roger Newman of Montreal, Canada; four sisters, Billie LeGear of St. Augustine, FL, Connie (Charles) Holland of Beechmont, KY, Joyce (Larry) Keene Bowling of Green, KY and Nancy (John) Moore of White Plains, KY and nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the office and staff of Dr. Edward Fox for their loving care and compassion, Dr. Jose Azar and Dr. Nicholas Zaromsky of the IU Medical Center and all the staff of the Simon Cancer Center. Thank you to our neighbors for pitching in and helping during Jim’s illness. Neil and Lou, what treasures you are. Thanks Pastor Swope, Renee and University Heights Baptist Church for your prayers, support and concern. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street. Private burial for family only will be held in Kentucky. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Simon Cancer Center at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. “You have lain down your sword and shield my darling and have received your crown of life. You have fought the good fight and endured to the end. What a life you lived, but nothing can ever enter our eyes, ears, or hearts the life you are living now.
