Leo N. Bittner

Leo N. Bittner, age 78, of Haubstadt, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, November 26, 2015 at his home. Leo was born August 2, 1937 in Evansville to the late Anton and Eleanor (Adler) Bittner. He was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church in Haubstadt, a 1955 graduate of Mater Dei High School, and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and the Knights of St. John at St. Wendel, where he had been awarded Knight of the Year. He also served 8 years in the Cee Bees Reserves. Leo worked most of his career as a dragline operator at Old Ben #2 Mine where he was a proud member of the United Mine Workers Association having served as Union Steward for over 20 years. Surviving Leo are his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann “Slats” Bittner, a daughter, Kathy (Dan) Clodfelter of Haubstadt; three sons, Mark (fiance’, Carolyn Chandler) Bittner of Evansville, Matt (Jean) Bittner and Eric (Lisa) Bittner, both of Haubstadt; a sister, Dorothy (Russ) Stratman of Evansville and two brothers, John (Bonnie) Bittner and Andy Bittner, both of Evansville; brother in law, Joe Seib; two sisters in law, Isabelle Bittner and Irma Bittner, all of Haubstadt and Leo’s close cousin and confidant, Gilbert T. (Rosie) Adler. Also surviving are grandchildren, Beth (Ralph) Kroft, Dana (Aaron) Wilson, Andrea (Nick) Michel, Alan Bittner, Clint Bittner, Holly Bittner, Mason Bittner, Nicole Bittner, Katie Bittner, Kirby (Jason) Dewig and Adam Splittorff; great-grandchildren Elisha, Isabel, Ashley, Vivian and Ryan Kroft and Waylon and Liam Dewig. In addition to his parent, Leo was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Seib, two brothers, Cornelius and Germaine Bittner and daughter in law Carol (Hartman) Bittner. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, November 30, 2015 at St. James Catholic Church, Rev. Kenneth Betz officiating. Burial will follow in the St. James Church Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 until 6:00 P.M. on Sunday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W.
