Mary J. Ashby

Having lived a long and blessed life with lots of loving family and friends, Mary Janice David Ashby has passed from this earthly life October 18th, 2020, to join many of them with our Lord in heaven. Born to Jim and Carrie Grosheart in Evansville, Indiana, she graduated from F.J. Reitz High School. Mary was always up for an adventure which took her from California to Montana and finally settling in Norman, Oklahoma being a military mother. She loved people and maintained life long friendships wherever she went. She eventually made her way back home to Evansville, Indiana after marrying Jack Ashby, who preceded her in death. They both belonged to the Riverbend Association where they had so many laughs and adventures. Thank you so much for those friendships. Mary loved to travel. One of her favorite places was Daytona Beach Shores, Florida. It was like her second home. After they would load up the buses (plural) with as many people as they could, they would hit the beach for a few weeks, twice a year. “Sociable” was the word and fun was the goal. Any place was fun if Mary was there. Only one of many places Mary traveled to, the one common occurrence was Mary’s ability to make people laugh while creating new and lasting friendships. She is survived by one son, Tom (Mike) David and his wife Lisa; one sister, Carolyn Gilmore; two grandsons, Chad Ford and his wife, Kara; Joshua Hinkle and his wife Chelsea; eight great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many wonderful nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved parents; one sister Juanita Rueger; two brothers, Clifton Grosheart and his wife Mary Lotus, Bill Grosheart and his wife Bonnie; two daughters, Debbie Dickens and Tammy Ford; and brother in law, Eddie Gilmore. She was a faithful member of Forest Hills Wesleyan Church. Thank you so much for those friendships. If you knew Mary, you know the Parkinson’s fight has ended and the Clabber tournament has begun. Her laughter and her smile has now been added to the joy in heaven. The family would be grateful if you would take a moment to add a happy or funny story you shared with Mary in the memory section since we won’t get to see you in person due to COVID. A collection of those would be so uplifting for the family. We’re sorry we won’t be able to see you but we understand. Mary would want you to stay safe. Funeral services for Mary will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Pierre Funeral Home, Pastor Randy Gilmore officiating. Burial will follow in Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 until 1:00 PM on Saturday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street. Masks should be worn by all who attend.
