Mary D McGinness

Mary D. (Hart) Donovan McGinness, age 78, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the Deaconess VNA Plus Charlier Hospice Center. Mary loved her family and leaves behind three children, Shannon (Bill) Helfrich, Dan (Michele) Donovan and Erin (Brian) Helfrich, step children, Jim E. (Gail Coad) McGinness, Carol (Mark) Flinn, John McGinness, Mike McGinness and Katie (Bryan) St. John; seventeen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings, Betty Heckert of Arizona, Nancy (Bob) Ondecker of Ohio and Dennis (Maggie) Hart of Florida, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, James “Jim” D. McGinness in 2009; by her mother, Margaret “Peggy” King; sister, Janet (Jack) Brown and by brothers, Bobby, Jimmy and Billy. Mary loved to travel and went on many driving adventures throughout the United States, flew to Hawaii and cruised to Alaska with her late husband, Jim. Her dream trip included going to Ireland. She began and spent nearly half of her life in Michigan as the seventh of eight children. She has resided in Illinois, in Kentucky in the home she and Jim built on Sledd Creek on Kentucky Lake and finally in Evansville. Outside of raising her children, she was a bookkeeper for a Michigan ice rink (where she enjoyed the occasional spin on the Zamboni), she was a personal caregiver for many elderly clients as a nurse’s aide at Parkview Care Center for 15 years and caring for her mother-in-law. She enjoyed crafting, boating, swimming, gardening, attending plays at the Civic Theatre, maintaining her neat home, her beloved cats, playing board games, dominoes and numerous card games with friends and family, lunching and visiting with “The Cousins” and cruising around town in her VW Beetle painted to look like a ladybug. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Robert Rusche, the Deaconess nursing staff of Unit 2900 and Charlier Hospice Center for the excellent care Mary received. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at St. Philip Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the St. Philip Church cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service held at 4:00 P.M. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 A.M. until service time on Thursday at St. Philip Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Philip Catholic Church, 3500 S.
