Raymond Adam Scheller

Raymond Adam Scheller, 87, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 15, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Ray was born February 4, 1936 in St. Wendel, IN to the late Joseph Anthony and Anna Catherine (Gries) Scheller. He was their youngest child. As a young man, Ray got the opportunity to work as a plumber and that became his livelihood for many years. He worked for Gil Bankert and Clyde’s Plumbing and was a member of Pipefitters Local 136. He worked in many buildings around Evansville and had many stories to tell. In 1954, Raymond met the former Dee Ann Autry at a dance in Warrenton. He caught her eye with his curly hair, suede coat and beautiful green eyes. They married on June 30, 1956. Ray was a loyal husband and did his best to spoil Dee Ann. She wanted a large family and he loved and supported them all. In 1984 Ray was injured on the job and no longer able to work. He was just 48 years old. Raymond and Dee Ann found new ways to fill their days. They installed a swimming pool, and Ray restored an antique tractor. They would winter in Florida, which they continued to do for 30 years. Raymond is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dee Ann; children, Elizabeth (Gary) Williams, Christina (Mike) Herschelman, Judith (Allen) Bradley, Carol (Ralph) Schmitt and Steven Scheller; grandchildren, Breanna (Jeff) Wyman, Ross (Michelle) Schmitt, Andrea Herschelman, Reid (Sara) Schmitt, Isaac (Amy) Bradley, Kyra Williams, Mariah Bradley and Kennedy Scheller and great grandchildren, Ava, Autumn, Charlotte and one more on the way. In addition to their own children, Ray and Dee Ann fostered babies for many years through Catholic Charities. They were inducted into the Brute` Society of the Diocese of Evansville in 2009 for their service to the church and their parish, Corpus Christi Church. In addition to being a member of Corpus Christi, Ray was also a member of the Haymakers/Riverbend Association, Owls, Eagles and Moose. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, September 20, 2023 at Corpus Christi Church, Rev. Bill Nicholas officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 until 7:00 PM on Tuesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 10:00 AM until service time on Wednesday at Corpus Christi, 5528 Hogue Road. Memorial contributions may be made to Corpus Christi Church.
