Russell L. Niemeier

Russell L. “Russ” Niemeier, 68, passed away on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Russ was born on January 3, 1948 to the late Leo F. and Cornelia C. (Weinzapfel) Niemeier in Evansville, IN. Russ grew up in the St. Philip area and attended Mater Dei and Mount Vernon High Schools. He retired in 2010. Among other things, Russ loved listening to good music, working in the yard, or watching a good movie. In his spare time in the 60’s and 70’s, Russ was a professional musician. He played with the John Dillingham Trio and the Gene Hayden Combo. Russ was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict. Russ is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara; a daughter whom he loved dearly, Kasandra Catherine “Kacy” and a granddaughter, the light of his eye, “the wee one”, Amelia Catherine. Also surviving is a sister Lois (Larry) Martin of Mt. Vernon, a niece and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the following for their professional, kind and compassionate care of Russ; Dr. Natalie Spradlin, Dr. Leora Horn, Dr. Anthony Cmelak and nurse, Barbara Cardin at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville, TN; Dr. Anthony Stephens, Dr. David Kim, Dr. Michael Miller and the kind nurses and staff at Oncology Hematology Associates in Evansville; Bobbi Jo, Kaley, Oliver, and Kari at Specialty Home Health Care in Evansville; and Crystal, Paula, Shannon, Siara, Erin and Shana at Gentiva Hospice Care in Evansville. Per his wishes, Russ will be cremated. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street. There will be a short memorial service held for Russ at 4:30 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please honor Russ with a memorial contribution to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation at www.lungcancerresearchfoundation.org. We think we mourn Russ’ passing, but let us stop to think of those who have gone before him and are waiting on the other side with open arms. Actually, we mourn for ourselves because we will miss him.
