Edgar Ray Hertel

Edgar Ray “Ed” Hertel, 86, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. Ed was born April 19, 1934 in Evansville to the late Valentine and Cecilia (Weber) Hertel. He retired from the Evansville Fire Department and after 20 years of service and St. Mary’s Medical Center as the Director of Security after 20 years. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church and a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Donna (Mathew) Hertel; two sons, Kent Duane (Melissa) Hertel and Kevin Drake (Ara Denise) Hertel; five grandchildren, Andrea Lynn Hertel, Elisabeth Marie (Jason Senger) Hertel, Jesse Ray Hertel, Brandon Drake Hertel and Jared Duane Hertel and three great grandchildren, Cecilia Marie Hertel, Jordy Lynn Turnock and Mila Rae Hertel. In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth “Virginia” Bippus and Esther Louise Meny and by a grandson, Brock Alan Hertel. There will be a Memorial Mass held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at Resurrection Catholic Church, Rev. Raymond Brenner officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 AM until service time on Wednesday at Resurrection Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.
