Frances Neighbors Calkin Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Frances Neighbors-Calkin of Evansville, passed away Saturday, July 23, 2022 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Fran was born on March 4, 1933, along with her womb-mate Frank, to the late Lola (Palmer) Wells and Leland Wells in Fulton, New York. After one year of college, Fran decided to join the United States Air Force. While stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, she met her future husband, James Neighbors of Evansville. Together, they made a career in the military while having eight children in four different states and Japan. Fran always thought she wanted an even dozen, but later decided eight was enough. After Jim’s retirement from the Air Force they settled in Evansville. Fran worked as a Head Start teacher. She enjoyed Friendship Ministries and being part of the AmVets Post #84 family, where she volunteered as chaplain and met her second husband, Bill. In addition to her involvement in AmVets Post 84, Fran was also a life member of American Legion Post #265. Surviving Fran are four daughters and three sons, Marjorie Cox of Tell City, IN, Lola (Dwayne) Delaney of Henderson, Mary (Mike) Piersall, Lori Neighbors, Jim (Patty) Neighbors, Mark (Kristi) Neighbors and Michael Neighbors, all of Evansville; twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren with two more on the way. In addition to her parents, Fran was preceded in death by husbands, Jim Neighbors and Bill Calkin; by a son, Martin Neighbors; by her twin, Frank Wells and by a son-in-law, Kyle Cox. There will be a memorial service held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Pierre Funeral Home, Rev. Terry Gamblin officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Tupman Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.
