James “Jimmy” Edward Woods, 84, of Evansville, passed away December 30, 2020 at St. Vincent Hospital with his loving wife and children by his side. James was born on November 24, 1936 in Evansville to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Seib) Woods. He attended school at and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Vanderburgh County and a 1955 graduate of Mater Dei High School. On December 24, 1960, he married the love of his life, Shirley. He was an employee of Pocket Beverage for 10 years, where he was nicknamed “Chief”. He was most well known for being a self-taught and self-employed upholsterer his entire adult life. James dedicated his whole life to his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were his entire world. He enjoyed attending Mater Dei football games and wrestling matches with his grandchildren, who nicknamed him “Pa”. He was also an artist; enjoyed painting, nature, watching NASCAR and Notre Dame football and spending time with his family. He had the most beautiful singing voice and will always be remembered for his goofy and happy-go-lucky personality. He could make anyone laugh and smile and will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him. James is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Ann (Williams) Woods; daughters, Susan (Schulyer) Smith of Owensville, Brenda (Jerome) Martin of Wadesville, Lisa (Greg) Kiesel of Cynthiana and Rebecca (Ginger) Woods of Evansville; four grandchildren, Brittany Martin, Lindsay (Kyle) Beckwith, Jessica Martin and Hunter Willis and two great grandchildren, Gabriella Givens and Leif Beckwith. Also surviving are sisters, Dolores Hanna and Carol Schaffer, brother, Ronald (Judy) Woods; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Woods and Daniel Woods and by sisters, Rosemary Voegel and Elizabeth “Betty” Williams. Due to the pandemic, funeral services will be private. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in Vanderburgh County. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vanderburgh County Humane Society, 400 Millner Industrial Drive, Evansville, IN 47710.
