Mary Jo Bridgford, 92, died on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at Hamilton Pointe of pancreatic cancer. Mary Jo was born on July 5, 1928 in Evansville to the late Lawrence and Florence (Schneider) Hammerstein. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from St. Mary of the Woods College and a Master of Arts in Education from Ball State University. She taught school for 25 years and took great pride and joy in her work. She loved teaching and traveling in this country and overseas. More than anything, she enjoyed spending time with her dear family and friends. Mary Jo is survived by her brother, Larry (Berta) Hammerstein of Raleigh, NC; twelve nieces and nephews, Cathy Crouch, Tom (Pat) Crouch, Barbara (Steve) Will, Tim (Barb) Crouch, Margie (Larry) McBride, Dan Crouch, Vince Hammerstein, Julie (William) Boler, Ken Hammerstein, Carol (Parker) Parish, Jeff (Letitia) Hammerstein, Sara (Bill) Yorgensen; several great nieces and great nephews, two stepdaughters, Elaine (Smokey) Daniels, Phyllis (Ray) Adams; a stepson, Scott (Carol) Bridgford; seven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many dear friends. In addition to her parents, Mary Jo was preceded in death by her sisters, Jean Hammerstein Ulrich and Ruth Hammerstein Griffin; by her first husband, N. Keith Burns; second husband, Eugene “Bud” Bridgford; stepdaughter, Allison Kissling and grandson, Nolan Adams. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hamilton Pointe and Heart to Heart Hospice for their loving care and devotion to Mary Jo and to everyone who offered support and comfort during this difficult time. Following Mary Jo’s wishes there will be no services held. She asked instead that everyone do something special for themselves in remembrance of her.
