Cecilia E Gries

Cecilia E. (Scheller) Gries, age 98, of Evansville, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Gries was born August 26, 1916 in St. Wendel, IN to the late Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Seibert) Scheller. She attended St. Wendel Grade School. As a young woman, Cecilia worked in the household of the former Mayor Dress. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city and in 1996 she received the Brute Society Award for her service to the church. Cecilia was an expert dumpling maker for the summer socials and Sunday dinners. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and quilting. Her family always came first and the tradition of gathering on Friday evenings has been handed down to the next generation. Surviving Cecilia are four daughters, Mary Jane (Ernie) Bradley of Evansville, Diane (Jim) Sides of Indianapolis, IN, Rose (David) Duncan of Chesterfield, MO and Donna (Larry) McDonald of Evansville; three sons, Paul (Mary) Gries, Don (Margaret) Gries and David (Sue) Gries, a daughter-in-law, Dr. Ann Gries, all of Evansville; a sister, Theresa (Jim) Cole and one brother Raymond (Deanne) Scheller; twenty nine grandchildren and fifty four great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Cecilia was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Joseph Gries in 1989; by a son, Robert J. Gries in 2011; sister, Margaret Crawford and by brothers, Sylvester Scheller, Joe Scheller, Lawrence Scheller, Val Scheller and Frank Scheller. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 E. Virginia Street, Evansville, IN 47711, Rev. Eugene Schroeder officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 9:30 A.M. until service time on Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ozanam Family Shelter, 1100 Read Street, Evansville, IN 47710 or to the Life Choices Maternity and Youth Home, 2225 W.
