Charles V King

Charles V. King, age 96, of Evansville, passed away Monday, August 17, 2015 at the Evansville Protestant Home. He was born Aug. 2, 1919 in Morganfield, KY to John and Mary (Dyer) King. Charles was a graduate of Reitz High School and he retired from the United States Postal Service. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Jupiter and was in the initial landing of Leyte, Philippine Islands in Oct, 1944, and was awarded the Philippine liberation ribbon with two bronze stars. Before he was drafted he worked as a pipefitter at the Shipyards building LSTs. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in the city. Charles loved scratch offs and betting on the ponies – often betting on the jockey more than the horse. He enjoyed writing poems and had several published. One of his favorite funny sayings was, “How many more shoplifting days til Christmas.” His family will miss his wit and humor. Surviving Charles are three daughters, Susan (Barry) Mielke of Evansville, Jeanne (Mike) Brown of Carmi, IL and Julie (Dave) Johnson of Evansville; three sons, Joe (Sue) King and John (Cheri) King, both of Evansville and Scott (Terri) King of Bedford, IN; one sister, Margaret Schidler of Evansville; nineteen grandchildren, Maria Gardner, Tomas King and Steve King of Anderson; Angela Moers and Bradley King of Evansville; Karen Harris of Newburgh; Pamela Pabst of Terre Haute; Gary Mielke of Noblesville; Greg Brown of Carmi, IL; Jeffery Brown, Gerry Brown, Ryan King, Jessica Wallace of Poseyville, Aimee King of Evansville; Nolan King of Wassila, Alaska; Kyle Finn of Boonville; Christopher King, Charles King and Sarah Kohlman of Bedford; 45 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Steven C. King in 2006, an infant son, Donald Eugene, four sisters and four brothers. There will be a memorial service held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, Dr. Dan Lovell officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 A.M. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.
