Herman George Rexing

Herman G. Rexing, age 88, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the home that he built. Herman was born October 5, 1927 in Evansville to the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Niemeier) Rexing and, along with his six brothers, was raised in St. Joe in the County. In 1949, Herman married Mary Laverne Hartmann and together they raised four daughters and a son. He worked for George Koch and Sons for 49 years before retiring. He was affectionately known as “Dutch” to co-workers. Herman was a devout catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of St. John. He served his country as a member of the United States Army. An avid outdoorsmen, Herman loved bird watching, hunting, playing golf and gardening. A true gentleman, loving husband and father, he will forever be in the hearts of his wife Mary of 66 years; four daughters, Mary Jane (Richard) Montgomery of Newburgh and Evelyn (Geoffrey) Sandefur, Kathy (Ted, Jr.) Niemeier and Julie (Lou) McCool, all of Evansville; a son, John Robert Rexing of Evansville; fifteen grandchildren, Ryan and Sara Montgomery, Daniel, Andrew, Adam and Laura Effinger, Jenny Koch, Angie, Ben and Chris Niemeier, Lily and Isaiah Rexing, Austin, Marty and Mitch McCool and thirteen great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by brothers, Sylvester, Bart, Joseph, Cletus, Clarence and Francis; by infant daughters, Catherine and Elizabeth and by a daughter-in-law, Joyce Rexing. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Rev. Simon Natha officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Mausoleum, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 10:30 A.M. until service time on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church.
