Michael A Head

Michael A. Head, 74, of Evansville, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Deaconess Hospice. He was the son of the late William F. and Lorena (Hartz) Head. Mike was a 1954 graduate of Sacred Heart Grade School and a 1958 graduate of Mater Dei High School. He completed his journeyman training with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 136, eventually achieving Master Plumber certification. Mike served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1961-1967. Mike spent his professional career at Industrial Contractor’s (SKANSKA) retiring in 2000. When not working, Mike enjoyed several hobbies including gardening and traveling. He took great pleasure in being outdoors and could usually be found working meticulously on the landscaping in his yard. Mike was an active father who enjoyed fishing and camping with his children. Family vacations were often spent camping in Yellowstone National Park, the Great Smoky Mountains and other state and national parks throughout the country. A proud and doting Grandfather, Mike reveled in making his grandchildren laugh and attending their sporting events and other activities. He was an active member of the West Side Nut Club for 28 years. He was also a member of Darmstadt Retirees, River Bend Association and a proud member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 136. His spirit and sharp wit will be missed by all who knew him. Mike is survived by Jennie (Buckman), his wife of 50 years, and by his children Lorrie Weiss (Greg), Marcey Vanpell (James), both of Evansville, and Tracey Gannon (Robert) of Orlando, FL. Mike’s son, Trevor Head (Debbie) proceeded his father’s ascension into Heaven in October 2007. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Hill (Doug) of Mount Vernon, IL and 8 loving grandchildren who he touched deeply: Ethan, Mason and Christian Head; Gavin and Lilly Weiss; Dominick and Anderson Vanpell; and Olivia Gannon. He is also survived by many cousins and innumerable friends. The family would like to thank Dr. Aziz Mehrzad and the caring staff at West River Health and Deaconess Hospice. At Mike’s request, his body has been donated to the IU School of Medicine. However, a visitation will be held Wednesday, September 30th from 1:00 – 4:00pm at Pierre Funeral Home with a brief memorial service at 3:00pm. Beginning at 5pm, family and friends are also welcomed and encouraged to visit and participate in a dinner celebration of Mike’s life at River Bend Social Club at 2207 West Franklin St. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association at 101 NW 1st Street, Evansville, IN 47708 or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at stjude.org.
