Paul "Pete" A. Weinzapfel

Paul A. “Pete” Weinzapfel, 92, of Evansville, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Deaconess Hospital Midtown Campus. Pete was born July 5, 1928 in Evansville to the late Alois and Mary (Humpert) Weinzapfel. He was a 1946 graduate of Reitz High School where he played football, baseball and was part of the mile relay team who participated in the state championship in 1945 and 1946. A Sergeant in the United States Army, 3rd Division Field Artillery 105th Battalion, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of VFW Post #1114, and participated in Honor Flight #EVV5 in October, 2016. Pete was a member of St. Philip Catholic Church, the St. Philip Men’s Club, St. Philip Conservation Club and Knights of Columbus #565. He worked as a water well driller, plumber and owned and operated Weinzapfel Well Drilling and Plumbing for almost 40 years. He also was a farmer until his passing at age 92. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Marrs Township Fire Department for many years. Pete loved to play golf and was able to shoot below his age at 91 years old. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Surviving Pete are daughters, Terri (Dan) Barnes, Michele (Don) Fleming and Paula (Rodney) Baehl; sons, David (Janet) Weinzapfel, Dan Weinzapfel, John “Honus” Weinzapfel and Jeff (Lori) Weinzapfel; grandchildren, Kevin (Kelly) Weinzapfel, Adam (Laura) Weinzapfel, Allen (Emily) Weinzapfel, Paul Weinzapfel, Marc Weinzapfel, Kate (Sam) Kuban, Ben (Kelsey) Fleming, Sam Fleming and Jake Fleming, Nathan (Alysen) Weinzapfel, Alex (Morgan) Weinzapfel and Megan Weinzapfel, Joshua Baehl, Zachary Baehl and Molly Baehl and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Eileen (Kercher) Weinzapfel in 2019; by granddaughter, Danielle Marie Barnes in 2002; by a sister, Mary Rose “Molly” Naab and by brothers, Anthony, Clarence “Simon”, Bernard “Fats”, Linus “Mac” and Joe Weinzapfel. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at St. Philip Catholic Church, Rev. Luke Hassler officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Philip Church Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street and from 9:30 AM until service time on Saturday at St. Philip Church, 3500 St. Philip Road S, Mt. Vernon, IN 47620. Masks should be worn by all who attend. The family understands if you choose not to attend the services because of the pandemic. The funeral Mass will be streamed live on Fr. Ryan Hilderbrand's YouTube channel for anyone who wishes to attend virtually.
